What is Register search?

Any search that retrieves data from an official government register - PPSR, ABR, ASIC, land titles, court files.

Register-based searchLast updated 2026-05-15

A register search is the broad category covering any inquiry made of an official register operated by a government body. In Australian commercial due diligence, the registers most commonly hit are:

  • PPSR (AFSA) - security interests in personal property.
  • ABR (ATO) - ABN, GST, registered business names, and historical trading names.
  • ASIC - company extracts, officer searches.
  • Land titles (state-by-state) - real-property ownership.
  • Court files - litigation history.

Hoist offers available ABR and other explicitly listed source checks. PPSR is a future contract only: preview and paid search are currently unavailable, fail closed without a price or register dispatch, and cannot be unlocked by an account or plan.

Related terms

  • PPSR - The Australian national register where security interests in personal property are recorded.
  • ABN - A unique 11-digit identifier issued by the ATO for tax and business purposes; covers companies, sole traders, partnerships, trusts.
  • ABR - The free public register of ABNs, GST registration, registered business names, and historical trading names, operated by the ATO.
